There are a few things that can make or break a camping trip.
A tent that leaks.
A forgotten sleeping pad.
A toddler who wakes up at 5:12 a.m.
And then there’s coffee.
Few moments in camping are as satisfying as wrapping your hands around a warm mug while the sun climbs over the mountains. The air is crisp, the campfire is still glowing, and for a few quiet minutes the only thing on the day’s agenda is deciding which trail to explore first.
Getting your camp coffee right isn’t about being a coffee snob. It’s about creating one of the best moments of the entire trip.
Over the years we’ve tried plenty of methods, but we’ve settled on three that consistently make it into our camping kit. Each has its own strengths depending on the type of adventure.
Here’s how they compare.
1. AeroPress: The Backpacker’s Favorite
If your priority is making the best cup of coffee while keeping weight and bulk to a minimum, the AeroPress is hard to beat.
It consistently produces an incredibly smooth, rich cup that’s surprisingly close to espresso. Whether you’re drinking it straight or adding a splash of hot water for an Americano, it’s probably the highest-quality coffee of the three systems.
Pros
- Excellent espresso-style coffee
- Lightweight and compact
- Quick and easy to brew
- Perfect for camping, road trips, and even travel
Cons
- Coffee cools fairly quickly
- Requires paper filters (don’t forget them!)
- Water still needs to be boiled separately
Best For
Campers who care most about coffee quality while keeping their kitchen setup small and lightweight.

2. Moka Pot: Classic Camp Coffee
There’s something satisfying about making coffee with a Moka Pot.
Fill the bottom with water, add grounds, place it over the stove, and a few minutes later you’re rewarded with rich Italian-style coffee that comes out piping hot.
It’s wonderfully simple. No special technique. No paper filters. Just water, coffee, and heat.
If your mornings involve lingering around camp rather than rushing onto the trail, it’s tough to beat.
Pros
- Rich, bold Italian-style coffee
- Coffee stays nice and hot
- Extremely simple two-step brewing process
- No filters required
Cons
- The metal body gets very hot—handle with care
Best For
Campers who enjoy slow mornings and appreciate a strong, classic cup of coffee.

3. Hibear All-Day Adventure Flask: The Multi-Tool
The Hibear isn’t just a coffee maker.
It’s one of the most versatile pieces of camp gear we’ve ever used. Read our full review.
Yes, it makes a solid pour-over coffee. But it also carries wine to camp, mixes evening cocktails, keeps drinks hot or cold, and replaces several pieces of gear with one thoughtfully designed vessel.
If you’re already carrying one for everything else, having a pour-over built in is a really nice bonus.
The tradeoff is that pour-over brewing simply takes more time than the other options, and the Hibear occupies considerably more pack space.
Pros
- Excellent all-in-one system
- Great pour-over for coffee lovers
- Beautiful design and premium build quality
- Also works for wine, cocktails, tea, and cold drinks
Cons
- Larger and heavier than dedicated coffee systems
- Pour-over brewing takes more time
- Requires paper filters
Best For
Campers who value versatility and appreciate owning one beautifully designed piece of gear that does many jobs well.

Which One Do We Reach For?
All three.
The AeroPress usually comes along when we’re trying to pack light or know we’ll be moving camp frequently.
The Moka Pot is our favorite for relaxed campground mornings when breakfast is cooking and nobody is in a hurry.
The Hibear comes whenever we want to simplify our packing list. Coffee in the morning, cold drinks on the hike, and cocktails around the fire—it earns its place surprisingly often.
None of them is objectively “best.”
They’re simply designed for different kinds of adventures.
Our Recommendation
If you’re buying your first dedicated camping coffee setup, we’d probably recommend the AeroPress. It’s compact, durable, easy to use, and consistently makes outstanding coffee.
If you love bold Italian coffee and enjoy slower mornings around camp, you’ll likely fall in love with the Moka Pot.
And if you’re the type of camper who appreciates thoughtful gear that serves multiple purposes, the Hibear All-Day Adventure Flask is one of those rare products that genuinely earns space in your camp kitchen.
Because at the end of the day, camping isn’t really about the coffee.
It’s about slowing down long enough to enjoy it.
